    Perfect!

    I just got this shoe for approaches and to use on a new Via Ferrata in town. They are super comfy and grippy. I was amazed how good they were on the Via Ferrata when I was having to smear or stand on small holds on the wall. I spent 6 hours in these hiking and climbing the first day and my feet were stoked!

    The Best New SCARPA Approach Shoe!

    I absolutely love the original Rapids as a hybrid approach/trail running shoe, but the new XT's are definitely a step up in the traditional approach shoe category, far better than the Crux or the Gecko in my opinion. It has a wider toe box, great shape, feels very supportive, hikes and climbs really well, and is much lighter than it looks. Since they have a leather upper, my only suggestion would be to go a half size down, as mine seem to have stretched a bit! Other than that they're perfect.

    So Far So Good

    I bought these looking for a replacement for my trusty Vasque Mantras, which are a little long in the tooth. So far, so good. I like that these are lighter and more comfortable. We�ll see how the suede wears over time. I will say that the initial quality and attention to detail is quite good.

    Comfortabe and capable

    Extremely comfortable light weight trail or approach shoe. Good traction, stability and protection for a low cut shoe. I haven't done any climbing as of yet, but am delighted with the purchase so far.

    Great Footwear, as always

    I can always count on Scarpa for a shoe or boot that fits my feet perfectly. These wrap and support my feet wonderfully. As a Ground Search and Rescue volunteer, I count on Scarpa to provide the support I need for callouts in the mountains or down on the oceanside of Vancouver Island.

What are approach shoes, and what are they used for?

An approach shoe is a hybrid between a hiking shoe and a climbing shoe, built for the walk-in to a climb and the scrambling that comes with it. Sticky rubber, a flat climbing zone under the toe, a protective rand, and a closer fit let you edge and smear on rock, while a supportive midsole keeps the shoe comfortable over trail miles.
Should I choose a low-cut or mid-cut approach shoe?

Low-cut is the default. It is lighter and leaves the ankle free to flex, which matters when you are scrambling or standing on small edges. Mid-cut adds ankle coverage, keeps scree and debris out, and adds support under a heavy pack on loose terrain. Cut does not change rock performance — both use the same outsole and climbing zone.
Can you climb in approach shoes?

Approach shoes are made for it. Sticky rubber and a flat climbing zone under the toe let you edge and smear on scrambles, low-fifth-class terrain, via ferrata and they are the standard choice for walk-off descents. They are not a replacement for climbing shoes on steep or technical routes, where a downturned last and a tighter fit are what deliver precision.
What’s the difference between approach shoes and hiking shoes?

Approach shoes are built to climb in; hiking shoes are built to walk in. An approach shoe uses stickier rubber, a low-profile tread with a smooth climbing zone at the toe, a wraparound rand for abrasion resistance, and a snugger last for precision on rock. A hiking shoe trades that away for cushioning, deeper lugs, and roomier all-day comfort.
