Biography

Father of two, Entrepreneur, and Professional Climber:

Whit Magro has been serving as an ambassador for the sport of climbing, and establishing first ascents in all disciplines for the past 30 years.  Probably best described as a “climbers, climber”, he tends to shy away from the limelight but Whit’s climbing resume is stacked with heaps of alpine climbing objectives.  He has established hundreds of pitches on remote big walls in North America, helped write the book on first ascents in Hyalite Canyon’s ice climbing, and climbed extensively in the El Chalten region of Patagonia.  A handful of Himalayan expeditions between 2005-2008 did yield some success as well.

In recent years he’s been more focused on “Daddy Style” objectives.  A new route in the Alaska range was his latest success, awarded by the AAC for significant ascents of 2022. Kichatna Spire, first ascent, “The Pace of Comfort''

Whit's hard working ethics also shine through in other aspects of his life. He is co/owner of a welding company called Stronghold Fabrication that employs 12.  Stronghold services the high end, structural, and architectural steel for homes in the Bozeman and Big Sky area.

Whit constantly reminds us that life is about the balance of family, climbing, and work.  He juggles it all in Bozeman, Montana.

  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport?: The Tetons first inspired me. I was 16 at the time. I learned then what I was good at. Some how a child hood of climbing trees and building forts in the woods set me up well for alpine climbing. I guess it was the need for adventure.
  2. Who were your influences early in life?: It was Jack Tackle, Doug Chabot, Alex Lowe, all local Bozeman climbers that had enormous impact on my climbing. It's what they were doing that influenced me in my late teen and early 20's. I chased after that,
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: It's the disconnection from the norm and the adventures that are had.
  4. What do you like about SCARPA as a brand?: Italians build the best shoes in the world.
  5. Why do you trust SCARPA products?: SCARPA has earned my trust and respect from nine years of relentless abuse of their products all over the world.
  6. What gets you out of bed on big days?: Black coffee and the desire to do what I enjoy most.
  7. What is your best excuse for skipping training?: Family fun with my kids.
  8. Favorite recovery/apres beverage?: Responsible me would say water or protein shake, but a cold beer is hard to beat.
  9. If you had a baseball walkup song, what would it be?: Eye of the Tiger
  10. What's the last movie that made you cry?: Movies are not real; I feel no connection with them.
  11. What's your dream trip or expedition?: Returning to the Karakoram to climb the north ridge of Latok 1, once my kids can understand my decision for the risk of big mountain expeditions. (I attempted it in 2008)
  12. What makes a good adventure partner?: Positive attitude is everything, especially when shit gets real.
  13. Two truths and a lie: I have been on 11 international expeditions. I have done some insane free soling in my day. Pigs can fly.
