Biography

It’s hard to believe that I’ve now been climbing for almost ten years. After being raised in California most my life, I found climbing once I moved in NYC in 2011 by way of the magical Shawangunks. Learning to climb in the “Gunks” has firmly cemented my love for exposure and big roofs with hero jugs. I am the founder and Managing Director of Flash Foxy and the Women’s Climbing Festival. I’ve also been a Board Member of the Access Fund since 2017. I’ve written, spoken and presented on the importance of creating a climbing community that reflects and welcomes everyone who identifies as a climber. I’m still trying to figure out what it means to bring my full self to climbing. Splitting my time between Brooklyn and Bishop, I can often be found plugging widgets into horizontal cracks at the Gunks or getting scared on granite highballs in Bishop.

Q & A

blue underline
  1. How did you get involved with your respective sport?: I had to have reconstructive shoulder surgery in 2008 which sidelined me from snowboarding, surfing and mountain biking. A girlfriend recommended top-roping at the gym, which would keep me from potentially falling on my shoulder and reinjuring it. I was immediately attracted to the movement, low impact and problem solving aspects of climbing at the gym. And once I got to climb outdoors, I fell in love with the intimate interactions with the landscape that rock climbing allows.
  2. Who were your influences early in life? : Not necessarily early, but I have had some incredibly amazing women mentors in my life that shifted the trajectory of my life, for which I will be forever grateful.
  3. What draws you to the outdoors?: So many things but one of the most important things that draws me to the outdoors is that through climbing and splitboarding, I’ve been able to find ways to engage and interact with the outdoors as an active participant rather than a distant observer. I am also reminded that this is not a human centric world and that we should not see ourselves as separate from nature but rather one part of a much larger, magical thing.
  4. What do you like about SCARPA as a brand?: One of the biggest things that drew me to Scarpa is their commitment to increasing access for folks from historically excluded communities. While they don’t have everything figured out, they are willing to try, make mistakes and take constructive feedback in order to grow as a company, industry and community.
  5. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: A good climbing partner knows how to laugh at the sufferfest and brings good snacks. They know you well enough to push you when you can do it but you’re scared and also knows to back down when you’re really ready to stop. Always down for a celebratory (or consolation) whiskey, making space for both equally.
