Biography

blue underline

I was born in Ecuador where I started to enjoy the mountains at the age of 10. The desire to spend some good time with friends on the mountains has taken me all around the world. I have been fortunate enough to climb along the Andes, in North America and the Himalaya, as well as guiding in Europe. When I decided to become a mountain guide, there was no international training in my country. It took me seven years of efforts at all levels, including travels to Bolivia, France and Argentina until I achieved the IFMGA diploma. Later in my career, my colleagues elected me technical director of the ASEGUIM (Ecuador Mountain Guide’s Association) and we were able to bring the international training to our country and therefore give access to that recognition to the future generations of aspiring guides. Nowadays I live in the US where I serve as instructor for the AMGA (American Mountain Guide’s Association) and I try to use my position to serve as a mentor for future mountains guides, especially those who come from BIPOC populations.

  1. Who were your influences early in life?: In first place, my family, who always encouraged me to pursuit my dreams, even if those didn’t look like a traditional path. 2. What draws you to the outdoors?: To me, mountains are a place where we all have to face our fears equally and have the same chances to enjoy our journeys. Mountains are my happy place!
  3. What’s your dream trip or expedition? : I have had to turn down offers to climb in Pakistan, since it can affect my process of application to the US residence and ultimately citizenship. As soon as I am clear from the paperwork in the US, I want to explore the Karakorum.
  4. What makes a good skiing/climbing/running/hiking partner?: Someone who can be on the same page at the time of pushing hard as well as turning around when necessary and knows how to have fun equally.
